Shah Highlights Urgency Of New Criminal Laws In J&K During Key Meeting

On Friday, Union Home Minister Amit Shah chaired a key meeting to assess the law and order situation in Delhi.

The meeting was attended by Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, Delhi Home Minister Ashish Sood, and senior officials from the Delhi government.

Additionally, the Union Home Secretary, Intelligence Bureau Chief, and senior officials from the Ministry of Home Affairs were also present.

Discussions centered on enhancing coordination between the newly elected Delhi government and the Delhi Police, along with strengthening security measures to tackle emerging threats.

Amit Shah has been closely monitoring security developments across the country and has consistently stressed the importance of a strong law enforcement framework in Delhi, considering its national significance.

Newly appointed Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, a first-time BJP MLA from Shalimar Bagh who took office on 20 February, attended the meeting alongside Delhi Home Minister Ashish Sood.

Delhi Police Commissioner Sanjay Arora and other senior officers were also present.

Shah Highlights Urgency Of New Criminal Laws In J&K During Key Meeting

Earlier, on 18 February, the Union Home Minister underscored the urgent need for enforcing ‘trial in absentia’ provisions and the full implementation of the new criminal laws in Jammu and Kashmir by April 2025.

This directive came during his meeting with the Union Territory’s Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha.

Shah urged the J&K administration to maximize the use of technology for swift justice under the three newly introduced criminal laws – the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023; Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023; and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam (BSA), 2023 – which replaced the Indian Penal Code (IPC), the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC), and the Indian Evidence Act.

He directed regular reviews of the implementation of these laws in Jammu and Kashmir, with the Chief Minister overseeing it monthly, the Chief Secretary fortnightly, and the Director General of Police weekly.
