Jammu, Mar 11 (KNO): The Legislative Assembly on Tuesday witnessed a heated exchange of words between Peoples Conference president Sajad Gani Lone and National Conference (NC) members over the establishment of Government Medical College (GMC) Handwara.

During the Question Hour, as per news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), NC MLAs Mir Saifullah, Qaiser Jamsheed Lone, and Javed Mirchal demanded that GMC Handwara be set up somewhere between Handwara and Kupwara. Sajad Lone also stood up, pointing out that his primary concern was to ensure that the allocated funds did not lapse.

Responding to Lone, Minister for Health and Medical Education Sakina Ittoo said that she had taken up the matter of extending funding with the Centre. “I don’t want funds to lapse. The minister should tell us whether there has been any response to the letter,” Lone insisted.

Lone said that he has got abuses from his political adversaries for getting the medical college sanctioned.

As NC MLAs attempted to counter Lone, he accused them of snatching the engineering college from Kupwara district. Lone was referring to the engineering college that was initially planned for Kupwara in 2014 during the NC-led government but was later shifted to Safapora Sonawari at the request of the J&K government.

Lone accused the National Conference of playing politics over the issue, leading to a verbal duel between him and NC minister Sakina Ittoo. “Omar Abdullah Sahab has brought thousands of such medical colleges.

It is not a question of who brought the college. I will order an inquiry into how it was set up in a flood-prone area,” she said—(KNO)

JAMMU, Apr 18: Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Saturday inaugurated the Dr Raj Kumar Thapa memorial museum and library, dedicated to the legacy of the additional district development commissioner, in Jammu and Kashmir’s Rajouri district. Thapa lost his life on (May 10) last year when a Pakistani artillery shell hit his residential quarters in the border district during unprovoked shelling linked to Operation Sindoor. He is survived by his wife, a doctor, and their two children. Paying tributes, the lieutenant governor recalled Thapa’s selfless service and unwavering commitment to public welfare, saying the memorial would serve as a source of inspiration for generations to come, an official spokesperson said. A documentary highlighting Thapa’s life and service was also screened on the occasion, he said. Family members of Thapa, along with senior officials of the security forces, police and civil administration, were present at the event. A 2001-batch Jammu and Kashmir Administrative Service (JKAS) officer, Thapa (54) was widely respected for his professional dedication and people-friendly approach. He had been posted as ADDC Rajouri in March last year and played a key role in handling the situation in the Badhaal village, where 17 members of three families, including 13 children, died under mysterious circumstances after falling ill between December 7 and January 19. Prior to his posting in Rajouri, he served as the officer on special Duty to former deputy chief minister Tara Chand from 2009 to 2014. He also held key positions, including the mission director of the Jammu and Kashmir Skill Development Mission and special secretary in the Labour and Employment Department.City & Local Guides
