United Nations Secretary-General Urges Immediate Ceasefire Between Cambodia & Thailand

FacebookTwitterWhatsapp

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has called on Cambodia and Thailand to immediately agree to a ceasefire and resolve their border dispute through dialogue.

In a statement released on Saturday, UN Deputy Spokesperson Farhan Haq said Guterres is “deeply concerned about the continuation of armed clashes at the border between Cambodia and Thailand since 24 July.”

The UN chief condemned the loss of lives, injuries to civilians, and destruction of property on both sides of the border.

He emphasised the need for a peaceful resolution and offered UN support in facilitating any efforts toward lasting peace.

US President Trump Intervenes; Speaks With Leaders of Both Nations

US President Donald Trump also weighed in on the escalating conflict, announcing on his social media platform Truth Social that he had spoken with Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and Thailand’s Acting Prime Minister. Trump urged both leaders to agree to a ceasefire.

According to President Trump, both nations expressed a willingness to end hostilities. “Ceasefire, Peace, and Prosperity seem to be natural. We will soon see,” he posted.

He also noted that the United States is engaged in trade with both countries but would refrain from advancing any agreements if the conflict continues.

Cambodia Reiterates Ceasefire Commitment

Following his conversation with Trump, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet reaffirmed his country’s readiness for an “immediate and unconditional ceasefire.” He stressed Cambodia’s intention to resolve the conflict peacefully and without preconditions.

Thailand responded on Sunday, stating that it agrees in principle to a ceasefire. However, Thai officials emphasised the need to see “sincere intention” from Cambodia before fully committing to the agreement.

Despite the diplomatic exchanges, gunfire reportedly continued along the Cambodia-Thailand border in the early hours of Sunday, according to Thai army sources cited by the National Broadcasting Services of Thailand.

The recent escalation marks a continuation of long-standing border tensions between Cambodia and Thailand.

Armed clashes have resulted in casualties, civilian injuries, and significant damage to infrastructure, drawing concern from the international community and prompting urgent calls for de-escalation.
