Varanasi Gives Grand Welcome To PM Modi Ahead Of India-Mauritius Bilateral Talks

Prime Minister Narendra Modi received an overwhelming welcome in Varanasi on Thursday, as thousands of locals gathered along the route of his convoy.

Residents showered flower petals and waved the Indian Tricolour and BJP flags, chanting ‘Modi, Modi’ in a display of warmth and admiration for their MP.

Enthusiastic supporters lined the roads around the Taj Hotel as the Prime Minister’s convoy passed.

The city wore a festive look, with vibrant decorations and security arrangements in place for the high-profile diplomatic visit.

Strengthening India-Mauritius Ties

PM Modi’s visit to his parliamentary constituency coincides with a significant diplomatic engagement—bilateral talks with Mauritian Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam, who is on an eight-day visit to India.

The two nations aim to bolster the Enhanced Strategic Partnership through the meeting, deepening cooperation across multiple sectors.

Set against the culturally rich backdrop of Varanasi, the talks will highlight the civilisational and spiritual ties that have long defined the India-Mauritius relationship.

The two leaders will review the full spectrum of bilateral cooperation, focusing especially on development partnerships and capacity building.

Discussions will also explore collaboration in emerging areas such as digital public infrastructure, renewable energy, the blue economy, healthcare, education, and science and technology.

This summit builds upon the positive momentum of PM Modi’s visit to Mauritius earlier this year, when both nations elevated their engagement to an Enhanced Strategic Partnership.

As a key partner in the Indian Ocean Region, Mauritius plays an integral role in advancing India’s MAHASAGAR (Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security and Growth Across Region) Vision and its ‘Neighbourhood First’ policy.

The strengthened partnership is also seen as a cornerstone of India’s broader engagement with the Global South.

High-Level Diplomatic Engagements

Earlier in the day, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri met with PM Ramgoolam to discuss the multifaceted nature of India-Mauritius relations. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) posted on X:

“Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri called on PM Navinchandra Ramgoolam of Mauritius today in Varanasi. Discussed multifaceted partnership and reaffirmed commitment in strengthening India-Mauritius Enhanced Strategic Partnership anchored in shared history, culture & people-to-people ties.”

The Varanasi summit is poised to become a landmark moment in India-Mauritius diplomacy.

Moreover, it reinforces the shared commitment to sustainable development, mutual prosperity, and regional stability—anchored in deep-rooted cultural, historical, and strategic ties.
