Ladakh voices push for immediate Hill Council elections

FacebookTwitterWhatsapp

Ladakh, Jan 12, KNT: Public demand has intensified in Ladakh for the immediate conduct of elections to the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council, Leh following the expiry of its five year term, even as no fresh election schedule has been announced so far.

The term of the elected Hill Council ended in late October 2025, but the absence of a poll notification has left the council without an elected mandate. Locals and political groups in Ladakh said the delay has created a democratic vacuum and undermined grassroots governance in the region.

They said the Hill Council plays a crucial role in planning, development, and local administration, and its prolonged absence has started affecting decision making at the district level. They stressed that administrative arrangements cannot substitute an elected body for long.

Several local leaders and civil society members, as reported by the news agency Kashmir News Trust, said that people of Ladakh want immediate elections so that public representatives can resume their role in addressing local issues, particularly during the harsh winter period when governance support becomes critical.

They said elections were originally expected around October 2025 as per the established five-year cycle, but no official explanation has been issued for the delay. Political uncertainty, administrative considerations, and recent unrest linked to broader demands for statehood and constitutional safeguards are being cited as possible factors.

In the interim, administrative powers of the council are being exercised through official arrangements under the Union Territory administration of Ladakh. However, locals argue that such arrangements lack public accountability.

People have urged the authorities to announce the election schedule at the earliest and restore an elected Hill Council to ensure participatory governance and democratic continuity in the region. [KNT]
