Shopian, Jan 25, KNT: A potentially fatal incident was narrowly averted in the Heerpora area of Shopian district when a massive heap of snow suddenly slid off a rooftop and buried a man standing below, officials said on Sunday.

The incident occurred within seconds, leaving the man completely trapped under heavy snow with no time to react. The sudden collapse created panic in the area as the victim disappeared beneath the snow.

Police personnel deployed on road duty nearby heard the loud sound of the snow slide and immediately sensed danger. Without waiting for additional support or equipment, the police rushed to the spot and began digging through the snow with their bare hands.

Officials said the swift and instinctive response of the police personnel proved crucial. After frantic efforts, the man was pulled out alive from beneath the snow, shaken but safe. He was later provided immediate assistance and was reported to be out of danger.

Locals said the incident could easily have turned into a tragedy had the police delayed their response even by a few moments. Residents of the area expressed deep gratitude to the police personnel, praising their alertness and courage.

The rescue has been hailed as a reminder of the risks posed by heavy snowfall and accumulated snow on rooftops, particularly during fluctuating temperatures. Officials have advised people in snowbound areas to remain cautious and clear rooftops safely to avoid such incidents.

Police officials said their personnel remain on high alert during the ongoing winter conditions to respond swiftly to emergencies and ensure public safety across snow affected areas. [KNT]
