Give Us Statehood Days, Not UT’s So-Called Good Days, Says MLA Rameshwar Singh

Jammu, Feb 3, KNT: MLA Bani Dr Rameswar Singh on Tuesday strongly opposed the demand for a separate Jammu, launching a scathing attack on the BJP and asserting that the people of Jammu and Kashmir were better off during the days of full statehood than under the present Union Territory arrangement.

Speaking to reporters after Assembly proceedings, Dr Singh said the so-called “good days” of the Union Territory had brought nothing but political uncertainty and erosion of identity. “Give us the difficult days of the Jammu and Kashmir state, not the so-called good days of the UT,” he remarked.

Taking aim at the BJP, the legislator alleged that the party’s politics was driven by power hunger rather than public welfare. He said the BJP was agitated because it wanted its own Chief Minister in Jammu and Kashmir, a demand he described as unrealistic. “That will never happen,” he asserted.

Dr Singh as per the news agency Kashmir News Trust accused the BJP of destroying the historical and political identity of Jammu and Kashmir, claiming that even the people of Jammu were aware of the damage caused. He said the current system had failed to deliver dignity or justice to the people of the region.

Referring to Ladakh, the MLA said its people were being suppressed and not even allowed to raise a legitimate demand for statehood. He termed the present phase as “black times” for democratic aspirations in the region.

Continuing his criticism, Dr Singh alleged that BJP leaders lacked even a basic understanding of Jammu and Kashmir’s history and complexities. He said the party’s approach reduced governance to administrative labels rather than respecting the will and identity of the people.

“The BJP has nothing to do with the people. Its politics revolves only around power,” he said, reiterating his opposition to any move that weakens the unity and identity of Jammu and Kashmir. [KNT]
