Star Indian opening batter Shubman Gill on Wednesday (March 12) won the ICC Player of the Month award for February 2025. The Player of the Month award, which Gill won for the third time in his more than six-year-long international career, helped him equal former Pakistan skipper Babar Azam’s world record of winning three Player of the Month awards. Before winning the big prize on Wednesday, Gill was named ICC Player of the Month in January 2023 and September 2023.

In January 2023, Gill had scored 208 runs from 149 balls against New Zealand during an ODI match played at Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad, and in September 2023, he scored one century each against Bangladesh (in the Asia Cup) and Australia (bilateral series).

Babar has won Player of the Month awards in April 2021, March 2022, and August 2023.

In the list of Indian players with the most Player of the Month awards, Gill is followed by Jasprit Bumrah, who has won two times, and six players—Rishabh Pant, R. Ashwin, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Shreyas Iyer, Virat Kohli, and Yashasvi Jaiswal—have been named as ICC Player of the Month award winners one time each.

Gil played five matches for India in February 2025, and with the help of two centuries and two fifties, scored 406 runs. He remained unbeaten on 101 runs in India’s first match of the Champions Trophy 2025, which was played against Bangladesh on February 20, and in the second Group A match, he hammered 46 runs against Pakistan in Dubai.

In addition to that, he scored 87 runs from 96 balls, 60 runs from 52 balls, and 112 runs against England in the three ODIs played on February 6, 9, and 12, respectively.

Gill’s superb show not only helped India win the bilateral series with a scoreline of 3-0 and the Champions Trophy with a 100% win record, but also he reached the No. 1 position in ODI batters ranking.

After winning his second ICC title as an India player in less than nine months, Gill will now join the Gujarat Titans camp ahead of the start of IPL 2025. The right-handed batter from Punjab is the captain of GT in IPL 2025, and he will now look to help the Ahmedabad-based franchise win the cash-rich league title for the second time in four years.
