Srinagar,: Amid mounting appeals from parents and students for an extension of the ongoing summer vacation in Kashmir schools, the School Education Department will hold a crucial review meeting on Monday, July 7, to take a final call on the matter.

Director Education Kashmir, GN Itoo, told the news agency Kashmir News Trust that the summer break officially lasts till July 7, and a formal review of the prevailing weather conditions will be conducted on that day. The meeting will be chaired by the Minister for Education, Sakina Itoo.

“While there has been considerable public demand to prolong the vacations due to the recent heatwave, we have received a fresh weather advisory indicating that the temperatures will drop and weather conditions will improve within the next one or two days,” Director GN Itoo said.

He acknowledged the concerns raised by students and parents who have expressed difficulties coping with the scorching heat, particularly in schools lacking adequate cooling infrastructure. However, he added that the recent advisory from the Meteorological Department suggests a likely dip in temperature, which will be a key factor in the upcoming decision.

“The final call about the extension of summer vacation will be taken tomorrow; however, pleasant weather is expected to prevail within one or two days,” he stated.

It is pertinent to mention that Kashmir has been reeling under an intense heatwave over the past two weeks, forcing authorities to declare early summer holidays in schools across the Valley. Many had expected an extension if the conditions persisted.

The outcome of Monday’s meeting will determine whether students will return to classrooms or enjoy a few more days of respite. [KNT]
