PM Modi Showcases India’s Decade Of Digital Transformation

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday underlined India’s progress in digital governance over the last ten years.

He cited landmark initiatives such as the JAM trinity (Jan Dhan–Aadhaar–Mobile), Unified Payments Interface (UPI), Government e-Marketplace (GeM), and the electronic National Agriculture Market (e-NAM).

Taking to X, the Prime Minister’s Office shared an article by Minister of State Rao Inderjit Singh, describing India’s journey as a ‘digital decade’ that is “not just about technology, but about transformation and the story is just beginning.”

The article credited India’s digital revolution to deliberate policy choices, noting that what began as targeted interventions has expanded into a nationwide shift impacting governance, finance, healthcare, commerce, education, and rural entrepreneurship.

“This journey has not been accidental. It has been carefully stewarded by the Government of India through a combination of bold policymaking, cross-ministerial collaboration, and a commitment to inclusive growth. While the line ministries – such as the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), the Ministry of Finance (MoF), the Ministry of Agriculture, and others — have executed large-scale projects on the ground, NITI Aayog has served as the policy engine, fostering convergence, driving thought leadership, and nudging the system toward scalable, citizen-first innovations, the article explains,” the Minister stated.

JAM Trinity: Foundation of Financial Inclusion

A key milestone was the rollout of the JAM trinity, which opened more than 55 crore bank accounts and allowed millions of citizens access to banking and direct benefit transfers.

One example, highlighted in the article, was of a single mother in rural Odisha who directly received welfare payments in her account, bypassing intermediaries for the first time.

Building on this foundation, India’s fintech sector expanded rapidly.

The UPI, developed by the National Payments Corporation of India with guidance from the RBI, transformed digital transactions.

Initially used for simple peer-to-peer transfers, now widely adopted by small traders, vendors, and gig workers.

India now sees over 17 billion UPI transactions every month, with even roadside sellers accepting digital payments through QR codes, the article noted.
