Only 7 of 58 Resolutions Admitted in J&K Assembly; PDP’s Waqf Proposal Dropped

Srinagar, Oct 23, KNT: Out of a total of 58 private members’ resolutions submitted for discussion in the ongoing Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly session, only seven were admitted on Thursday, while the rest were dropped during the ballot process, including the Peoples Democratic Party’s resolution seeking to transfer custodianship of Waqf properties to the Mirwaiz-led Muttahida Majlis-e-Ulama.

Assembly officials said that the resolutions were subjected to a ballot as per the standard legislative procedure, in which only a limited number are selected for formal discussion. “A total of 58 resolutions were received, of which seven were admitted through ballot, while the remaining were dropped,” an official confirmed.

Among the dropped resolutions was the PDP’s proposal to place the management of Waqf assets under the control of the Mirwaiz’s religious body, a move that was being closely watched in political and religious circles. Party insiders said the resolution was aimed at restoring community participation in the management of religious endowments and ensuring transparency in their functioning.

Several legislators expressed disappointment over the outcome of the ballot, saying that many important public issues could not find a place in the discussion due to procedural limitations. “There are significant matters raised by members that deserve debate. The ballot process, though procedural, often leaves out crucial resolutions,” one lawmaker said.

The seven admitted resolutions are expected to be taken up for debate from tomorrow. [KNT]
