Low Open Merit Share in NEET-PG 2025 Triggers Concern in J&K, Only 38 Percent Unreserved Seats in MD/MS Courses

Srinagar, Nov 22, KNT: The newly issued tentative seat matrix for NEET-PG 2025 has sparked sharp concern among aspirants in Jammu and Kashmir, who say the distribution of MD and MS seats leaves only thirty-eight percent available under the unreserved open merit category. Candidates have termed the distribution “imbalanced” and are urging authorities to review the matrix to ensure fairness in allocation.

The seat chart, accessed by the news agency Kashmir News Trust, shows that of the available government MD and MS seats across GMC Srinagar, GMC Jammu, SKIMS Soura, GMC Baramulla, GMC Anantnag, GMC Doda and GMC Rajouri, a substantial portion is distributed across various reserved categories. Aspirants say the share left for open merit candidates is disproportionately low and does not reflect the overall competitive landscape of NEET-PG.

Several postgraduate aspirants expressed worry that with only thirty-eight percent of the seats marked open merit, many meritorious candidates may be pushed out despite strong scores. They said the demand is not against reservation policies but for a balanced and just distribution that does not excessively shrink opportunities under the open category.

Candidates said they will appeal to the Board and the Health and Medical Education Department to re-examine the matrix before the counselling process begins. They added that transparency and fairness in postgraduate admissions are essential to ensure confidence among thousands of NEET-PG aspirants in Jammu and Kashmir. [KNT]
