Pahalgam, Feb 19 (KNC): The Pahalgam Development Authority (PDA) has imposed a complete ban on the use and carrying of polythene and other plastic items across all tourist destinations and environmentally sensitive zones falling under its jurisdiction.

According to an order issued by Chief Executive Officer PDA, Mir Nasrool Hilal Jeri (JKAS) as per news agency Kashmir News Corner — KNC, plastic bags, chips packets, plastic bottles, canned drinks, plastic crockery and other non-biodegradable items have been banned at tourist hotspots, parks, river banks, streams, forest areas, residential and commercial zones, religious places and along the Yatra route within the PDA limits.

The order states that widespread littering of rivers, forests and public spaces by plastic waste has posed serious environmental hazards and risks to human and animal life. In view of promoting eco-friendly tourism and protecting the fragile environment of Pahalgam, the identified areas have been declared “Polythene-Free Zones” with immediate effect.

Authorities have warned that any violation of the order will invite strict action as per rules. Continuous violations may also lead to cancellation of registration certificates issued by the J&K Tourism Department. Additionally, a fine of ₹2,000 will be imposed on anyone found littering or dumping banned plastic and non-biodegradable items in the notified areas.

The order has come into force with immediate effect. (KNC)
