Srinagar, March 5, KNT: Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leader Waheed-ur-Rehman Para has criticised the Jammu and Kashmir government over what he described as an inadequate response to the recent developments involving Iran, questioning why the J&K cabinet had not issued a clear condemnation resolution.

In a post on social media, Para said that National Conference president Farooq Abdullah had asked the Government of India to clarify its position on the reported US-Israel attack on Iran, but noted that the appeal came days after the strikes.

Para also questioned the stance of the Jammu and Kashmir government led by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, saying the administration had not issued a strong condemnation.

“What is troubling is the silence of J&K’s own government. Instead of calling out Israel’s attack clearly, the statement described the incident merely as a ‘recent development’,” Para wrote.

He asked why the issue had not been formally discussed by the cabinet.

“If the government truly stands with the people, why not pass a clear and official resolution through the cabinet?” Para said, also questioning why discussions were held at the Nawa-i-Subh party office rather than through an official government forum.

Para further said that as the leader of India’s only Muslim-majority region, the Chief Minister had an opportunity to show moral clarity and solidarity with the victims of the conflict.

The remarks come amid widespread reactions in Kashmir following the escalation in the Middle East, with protests and shutdowns reported in several areas of the Valley after reports of the killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader during the conflict.

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, however, had earlier expressed concern over the developments in Iran and appealed for calm and restraint in Jammu and Kashmir.  [KNT]

A documentary highlighting Thapa’s life and service was also screened on the occasion, he said.
