"God saved me": Farooq Abdullah after escaping assassination attempt in Jammu

Jammu, Mar 12 (KNO): A day after escaping an assassination attempt, National Conference (NC) president Farooq Abdullah Thursday said he was saved by God and that he doesn’t know the attacker. The former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister escaped unhurt after a man attempted to open fire at him at a wedding ceremony in Jammu last night.

Speaking with reporters in Jammu today, Farooq Abdullah, per news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), said that he does not know the attacker and had no personal dispute with him. “I don’t know this man at all. He has said that he had been waiting for 20 years and had a personal grudge, but I don’t know what his purpose was. I have never tried to harm anyone,” he said.

He said he initially mistook the gunfire for firecrackers before being informed by his security personnel that a man attempted to open fire at him. “I felt a sudden heat but did not immediately realise that gunshot had been fired. My security personnel quickly put me inside my car. Then they told me that the man fired two bullets from his revolver,” he said.

The NC president also raised questions over the absence of adequate security arrangements at the venue. “To say there was a security lapse is a big statement, but the fact is there was no police arrangement there. Many high profile people had come to attend the wedding, so there should have been protection,” he said.

“I thank Allah that my security personnel were there. Our ministers and MLAs also gave me courage at that time,” he said.

He added that he also received a phone call from Union Home Minister Amit Shah after the incident and that he assured a thorough probe would be conducted into the incident—(KNO)

JAMMU, Apr 18: Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Saturday inaugurated the Dr Raj Kumar Thapa memorial museum and library, dedicated to the legacy of the additional district development commissioner, in Jammu and Kashmir’s Rajouri district. Thapa lost his life on (May 10) last year when a Pakistani artillery shell hit his residential quarters in the border district during unprovoked shelling linked to Operation Sindoor. He is survived by his wife, a doctor, and their two children. Paying tributes, the lieutenant governor recalled Thapa’s selfless service and unwavering commitment to public welfare, saying the memorial would serve as a source of inspiration for generations to come, an official spokesperson said. A documentary highlighting Thapa’s life and service was also screened on the occasion, he said. Family members of Thapa, along with senior officials of the security forces, police and civil administration, were present at the event. A 2001-batch Jammu and Kashmir Administrative Service (JKAS) officer, Thapa (54) was widely respected for his professional dedication and people-friendly approach. He had been posted as ADDC Rajouri in March last year and played a key role in handling the situation in the Badhaal village, where 17 members of three families, including 13 children, died under mysterious circumstances after falling ill between December 7 and January 19. Prior to his posting in Rajouri, he served as the officer on special Duty to former deputy chief minister Tara Chand from 2009 to 2014. He also held key positions, including the mission director of the Jammu and Kashmir Skill Development Mission and special secretary in the Labour and Employment Department.City & Local Guides
