Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella on Monday described artificial intelligence’s (AI) influence on agriculture as ‘phenomenal’.
In a video shared on social media platform, Nadella showcased how AI is boosting crop yields on a small farm in Baramati, Maharashtra.
The clip illustrates how AI-driven solutions assist farmers in optimizing resources and improving productivity.
Taking to X, Nadella posted, “The one example that I wanted to highlight was one of the small farmers who was part of the Baramati Co-op, where you can take this powerful technology but make it have an impact, where a small landowner is able to improve the yield of their land. And the numbers they shared in terms of reduction in chemicals, improvement in water usage, and ultimately, yield was phenomenal.”
He also highlighted how geospatial data from drones and satellites can assist farmers by providing insights in their native language.
“One of the things it does is sensor fusion. We’ve been talking about it for decades. This is using geospatial data, spatial-temporal data from drones, from satellites, from the soil, all getting connected in real-time and then to apply AI to it and then translate it back into knowledge for a farmer who is just asking questions in their vernacular language. That’s the stitching together is pretty phenomenal to see,” the post added.
Reacting to Nadella’s post, Tesla and SpaceX founder Elon Musk commented, ‘AI will improve everything’.
Agricultural Initiatives Of Microsoft
Microsoft has been working on AI-powered agricultural initiatives in Baramati since 2022, in collaboration with the Agricultural Development Trust (ADT).
The project aims to integrate AI, satellite imagery, and other digital tools to support sustainable and efficient farming practices.
Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella acknowledged that one of his major missteps was underestimating the rise of search, a sector where Google established dominance.
He admitted that Microsoft initially believed the web would stay decentralized and failed to anticipate search becoming its most lucrative business model.
He stated that missing the biggest business model on the web was an important learning experience, as Microsoft had assumed the web would remain decentralized.
