India has achieved 88% self-sufficiency in ammunition production, according to Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh.

This milestone reflects the country’s growing capability in producing essential defense materials domestically.

Singh made the announcement at IIT Mandi’s 16th Foundation Day celebration, where he also emphasized India’s rising defense exports, which reached Rs 23,000 crore in 2023-24.

The country aims to increase this figure to Rs 50,000 crore by 2029.

Encouraging Technological Innovation In Defense

Rajnath Singh urged Indian institutions like IIT Mandi to lead the way in developing advanced technologies, particularly in AI warfare, cybersecurity, and indigenous AI chip manufacturing.

He stressed that these innovations are essential for India to achieve self-reliance and enhance its defense capabilities.

The Minister also called on young innovators to contribute to making India a technologically advanced nation, aligning with the country’s vision to become a developed nation by 2047.

Focus on AI, Cybersecurity, & Emerging Technologies

Singh highlighted the critical need for AI-driven war doctrines and robust cybersecurity measures to protect India’s national interests.

He also acknowledged the positive strides being made in robotics, drone technology, and AR-VR technologies at IIT Mandi, foreseeing their future impact on the defense sector.

Furthermore, he noted India’s significant progress in digital technologies, including its telecommunication sector, which is now the second-largest globally, and the global success of the UPI digital payments system.

The Minister’s address underscored the importance of technological advancements in bolstering India’s defense sector.

By focusing on innovations such as AI, cybersecurity, and indigenous technologies, India aims to strengthen its self-sufficiency in defense and lead in global technological advancements.
