Baramulla, June 17: A group of freelancer’s, working under the team name The Freelancers, won third prize in the Film Competition held during the Media Festival 2025. The team included Mehroob Mushtaq, Numan Bhat, Syed Sakeena, and Suhaib Bhat, who were recognised for their short film titled DODHDOUR (Nature’s Sustainable Cooling)
Their film, screened during the festival’s creative showcase, stood out for its storytelling, visual style, and relevant theme. The competition was judged by noted filmmaker Ronaq Zahoor, who praised the originality and depth in the student entries. He especially appreciated the honest approach of young filmmakers in addressing real-life issues.
Speaking about the achievement, Numan Bhat, one of the team members, said, “It feels amazing to see our hard work being recognised. We wanted to tell a story that speaks about the challenges and independence that come with freelancing, especially for young creatives like us.”
The film highlighted the struggles and resilience of young freelancers navigating a competitive media landscape. Through simple but powerful scenes, the team managed to connect with the audience and the jury alike.
Another member, Mehroob Mushtaq, added, “Working on this project taught us the value of teamwork, planning, and staying true to the story. The festival gave us a chance to express ourselves and learn from others.”
Suhaib Bhat, who was part of the direction and scripting process, said, “This film was close to our hearts because it reflects our own journey as students trying to make a mark. Getting appreciated at a platform like this has boosted our confidence.”
The Department of Media Studies at GDC Baramulla had organised the Media Festival 2025 as a platform to promote media literacy and encourage student storytelling. The event included competitions in film, photography, feature writing, and photo essays, drawing participation from colleges across the Valley.
Prof. Tariq Chalkoo, who spoke during the valedictory session, said, “The energy and ideas displayed by students like The Freelancers show how far our youth have come in blending academics with creativity.”
The recognition has further inspired the young filmmakers to continue exploring stories that matter. As Syed Sakeena said, “This award is not the end — it’s just the beginning of something bigger.”
The Freelancers have not only won an award but also the hearts of many with their meaningful and thoughtful film.
