Prime Minister Narendra Modi will begin a two-nation visit to the United Kingdom and the Maldives on Wednesday, highlighting a key diplomatic initiative aimed at strengthening strategic partnerships and regional collaboration.

The UK leg of the visit, taking place from 23–24 July at the invitation of British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, marks PM Modi’s fourth trip to the country.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) in its press release stated, “During the visit, the two sides will also review the progress of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership (CSP) with a specific focus on trade and economy, technology and innovation, defence and security, climate, health, education and people-to-people ties.”

Regional and global issues of shared interest are also on the agenda.

The discussions will likely invigorate the India-UK CSP, with both sides aiming to accelerate collaboration, including negotiations around the India-UK Free Trade Agreement (FTA).

During his stay, PM Modi will likely meet King Charles III.

The second part of the tour will take PM Modi to the Maldives from 25–26 July, following an invitation from Maldivian President Dr Mohamed Muizzu.

This will be PM Modi’s third visit to the Maldives and the first by any foreign head of state or government during President Muizzu’s term.

The MEA noted, “The two leaders will also take stock of the progress in the implementation of the India-Maldives Joint Vision for a ‘Comprehensive Economic and Maritime Security Partnership’, adopted during the State Visit of the President of Maldives to India in October 2024.”

Guest of Honour at Maldives’ 60th Independence Day

A notable highlight of the visit will be PM Modi serving as Guest of Honour at the Maldives’ 60th Independence Day celebrations on 26 July.

The trip reflects India’s commitment to deepening relationships with its maritime neighbours through its ‘Neighbourhood First’ approach and the Vision MAHASAGAR framework.

The leaders are expected to evaluate progress in crucial sectors such as infrastructure, defence collaboration, and regional economic integration.

These back-to-back engagements underscore India’s proactive diplomacy and reaffirm its strategic focus on the Indian Ocean region and beyond.
