On the occasion of World Tuberculosis Day, the Department of General Medicine, Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS), organized a comprehensive screening-cum-awareness camp at the Health and Wellness Centre, Sangeen Darwaza. The programme was conducted in collaboration with the Department of Community Medicine and the Zonal Medical Officer, Zadibal.
The initiative aimed at facilitating early detection of tuberculosis while simultaneously enhancing awareness among the general public regarding its signs, symptoms, prevention, and timely management.
Clinical consultation services were provided by Dr. Farhana, Associate Professor, and Dr. Nazia, Assistant Professor, Department of General Medicine, along with senior residents. Individuals identified as high-risk based on clinical evaluation were advised further diagnostic investigations, including chest radiography, which was arranged as part of the camp.
In addition to tuberculosis screening, all beneficiaries underwent basic health assessments, including blood pressure measurement, blood glucose testing, and anthropometric evaluation (height and weight). These services were efficiently carried out by resident doctors from the Department of Community Medicine, ensuring a holistic approach to patient care and community health promotion.
Health education sessions were also conducted to raise awareness about the signs and symptoms of tuberculosis, its modes of transmission, preventive strategies, and the importance of early diagnosis and treatment adherence. The sessions were delivered by Dr. Javaid, Additional Professor, and Dr. Shamila, Associate Professor, Department of Community Medicine, who emphasized the public health significance of tuberculosis and the critical role of community participation in its control.
Additionally, a capacity-building session for healthcare staff was conducted by Dr. Andleeb, Medical Officer–TB Control, focusing on tuberculosis management protocols, patient counselling, and strengthening TB control services at the primary healthcare level.
A total of 70 beneficiaries attended the camp and availed the services provided. The programme was successful in enhancing community awareness, promoting early screening, and strengthening healthcare capacity for tuberculosis control.
