After indulging in Diwali festivities, it’s natural to feel like your body needs a reset. The feasts and sweets are a part of the celebration, but they can leave you feeling bloated and sluggish. A post-Diwali detox can help restore balance, improve digestion, and rejuvenate both body and mind. Tanya Khanna, M.Sc Public Health Nutrition (Gold Medalist), MA English, Nutritionist and Yoga Trainer, Alyve Health shares a holistic approach to help you detox:

  1. Hydrate YourselfStart your detox by flushing out toxins with plenty of water. Aim for at least 10 glasses of water a day. You can enhance hydration by adding ingredients like:● Jeera and Lemon Water: Rich in Thymol and Vitamin C, it helps in digestion and boosts the immune system.● Cucumber and Mint Infused Water: Helps in cooling the body and reducing bloating.
  2. Detox DrinkWarm water with a pinch of turmeric is an ancient remedy to boost metabolism and reduce inflammation. Turmeric’s curcumin content is a powerful antioxidant that helps detoxify the liver.
  3. Include Fiber-Rich FoodsIncorporating plenty of fruits and vegetables into your diet is essential. They are packed with vitamins, minerals, and fiber which help in digestion and provide energy. Consider:● Leafy Greens like paalak, bathua, and methi, which are loaded with nutrients.● Fruits such as apples, pears, and citrus fruits, which promote digestion.● Whole Grains and Millets such as jowar, brown rice, and oats for added fiber and to keep you feeling full longer.
  4. Probiotics for Gut HealthAfter festive eating, Probiotics like yogurt, buttermilk, and fermented foods such as idli and dosa can help restore good bacteria and support digestion.
  5. Say No to Refined and Fried FoodsGive your body a break from refined sugars, fried snacks, and processed foods. Opt for natural sweeteners like honey or jaggery in moderation, and instead of fried snacks, enjoy roasted or baked options.
  6. Include Herbal TeasHerbal teas such as green tea, ginger tea, and peppermint tea can help soothe your digestive system, reduce bloating, and improve metabolism.
  7. Eat Light, Balanced MealsFor the next few days, focus on eating smaller, balanced meals to give your digestive system time to recover. Include:● Khichdi: A simple, nutritious mix of rice and lentils that’s easy to digest● Moong Dal Soup: High in protein and fiber, it supports detoxification.● Steamed Vegetables: Light and full of nutrients, they are easy to digest.
  8. Get MovingMovement is essential to help your body detox naturally. Engage in light exercises like:● Yoga: Focus on detoxifying poses like twists, forward bends, and deep breathing exercises to improve digestion and circulation.● Walking: A quick 10-minute walk after meals can boost metabolism, enhance mood, and aid digestion.
  9. Prioritize SleepA good night’s sleep is crucial for your body’s natural detoxification process. Ensure you get 7-8 hours of uninterrupted sleep.
  10. Mindful EatingFinally, ease back into mindful eating. Focus on eating slowly, savoring each bite, and listening to your body’s hunger and fullness cues.Post-Diwali detox is about nourishing your body with wholesome, balanced foods and practices that support natural detoxification. With a little effort and mindfulness, you can return to feeling your best, while enjoying the festive memories!
