FacebookTwitterWhatsapp

Maintaining kidney health through proper nutrition is essential for overall well-being. Adding the right food items to your daily diet can significantly impact the kidney function in your body. Foods rich in antioxidants can be a major health boost for people with existing health conditions or the ones looking to prevent future issues. Hence, the focus must be set on choosing items that minimise the burden on your kidneys by regulating the intake of certain vitamins and minerals.

Let’s take a look at seven such nutrient-rich food items that can help promote better kidney health.

Red bell peppers

Low in potassium and high in flavour, red bell peppers are perfect for a healthy kidney diet. These vegetables are an excellent source of vitamins C and A. They also include vitamin B6, folic acid and fibre. Red bell peppers are rich in lycopene, an antioxidant that protects you against certain cancers.

Cabbage

Rich in phytochemicals and chemical compounds that break up free radicals, cabbages are an essential component of a diet for healthy kidneys. This green leafy vegetable protects your cells from damage which may cause cancer. High in vitamin K, C and fibre, cabbages also foster cardiovascular health.

Cauliflower

A cruciferous vegetable, cauliflowers are rich in vitamin C. They are also a good source of folate and fibres. Cauliflowers are packed with essential compounds such as indoles, glucosinolates and thiocyanates that enable your liver to neutralise toxic substances.

Garlic

Garlic has several antimicrobial properties that help prevent plaque from building on your teeth. It is anti-inflammatory which helps reduce kidney stress, and regulates blood pressure while keeping infections away. Garlic also reduces cholesterol, making it an excellent food item that keeps your kidneys healthy.

Onions

Widely used in many dishes, onions are rich in flavonoids like quercetin. It is a powerful antioxidant that reduces the risk of heart disease, protecting you from cancers. Onions are low in potassium and a good source of chromium. They help cleanse your kidneys while improving circulation and lowering inflammation.

Red grapes

Red grapes are also rich in several flavonoids which give them the reddish pigment. Having this fruit regularly can help protect your body against cancer and inflammation. Red grapes help relax the muscle cells in blood vessels, improving circulation.

Cherries

Packed with antioxidants and phytochemicals, cherries help protect the heart. Having them regularly as a snack in between your meals can reduce inflammation. They help combat oxidative stress that may contribute to kidney damage.
