As the winter season descends, bringing with it a chill in the air, our cravings for warm and comforting foods intensify. From savoury main courses to mouth-watering desserts, the cold weather calls for hearty meals and cozy snacks that can warm us from the inside out. These hearty dishes with seasonal ingredients make them unique and almost exclusive to this time of year.

As the temperature drops, let’s explore some delicious winter comfort foods that can satisfy your food cravings and keep you warm.

Gajar Ka Halwa

We cannot miss out on this most loved and delectable winter treat. The season is incomplete without having a bowl full of the iconic Gajar Ka Halwa. This rich, decadent dessert, made with grated carrots, milk, sugar, ghee, nuts, and cardamom, is a beloved delicacy across India. The sweet and aromatic flavours, combined with its melt-in-your-mouth texture, make it a perfect winter indulgence. Whether enjoyed hot or cold, this is a go-to winter dessert for many Indian households that can be customized with various ingredients like dry fruits, nuts, or even chocolate chips. It’s a timeless classic that continues to warm hearts and satisfy taste buds, making it a quintessential winter dessert.

Sarson Ka Saag

Another wintertime favourite dish that will make your tummy do a happy dance is Sarson Ka Saag. Made with fresh mustard greens and spinach, this traditional Punjabi dish is served with Makki Ki Roti. This rich and robust dish is incomplete without a dollop of butter! Plus, Sarson Ka Saag is not only lip-smacking but it is also packed with essential nutrients, which boost immunity.

Onndhiyu

Gujarati’s look forward to winter because of its special dish, Onndhiyu. This traditional winter recipe is prepared with seasonal vegetables like brinjal, sweet potatoes, green beans, fenugreek leaves, ghee, and various spices. Traditionally served with roti or puris and paired with shrikhand, this dish is prepared in a pot that is overturned and cooked underground in earthen pots. But you can also make this dish using a pressure cooker.

Methi Ka Shaak

Another winter recipe of India is fenugreek leaves. Rich in iron, protein, vitamins, and fibre, fenugreek leaves help you build immunity. It is enjoyed with rotis, and these leaves can also be enjoyed in dishes like methi thepla and methi bhaji.

Til Laddoo

If you’re someone with a sweet tooth, Til Laddoo is sure to win you over. With just a few ingredients, these laddoos are surprisingly easy to make and a perfect winter food to keep you warm. Made from til (sesame seeds), peanuts, and jaggery, Til Laddoo is crunchy and originates a fine, nutty aroma. These laddoos are usually made from December and continue till mid-January, i.e., the festival of Makar Sankranti.

Pitha

These soft and crunchy pithas are a staple from the eastern states of West Bengal, Bihar, Assam, and Odisha. Pitha is essentially a sweet dumpling filled with different types of fillings, ranging from jaggery to coconut. This winter delicacy is also a festive sweet, savoured during Makar Sankranti, Poush Parbon, and Bihu.
