Drinking water is essential for our health and plays a significant role in managing several physical conditions. Packaged bottled water has become a common source of drinking water in the modern lifestyle.

Storing water in a car, especially during travel, is a frequent practice. However, this raises concerns about the safety of consuming water left in a hot car for extended periods.

Leaving water in a car for 24 hours can lead to potential health risks. The high temperatures inside a car can cause chemicals from the plastic bottle to leach into the water.

Consuming water contaminated with these chemicals can be detrimental to our health. Older plastic bottles, in particular, may release chemicals like phthalates and bisphenol-A (BPA) at elevated temperatures.

Studies have indicated that prolonged storage of water in plastic bottles, even newly manufactured ones, can be unsafe. These chemicals can disrupt hormonal balance in the body.

A study conducted by the University of Florida’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (UF/IFAS) found that leaving plastic water bottles in warm conditions can cause chemicals like antimony and bisphenol A (BPA) to leach into the water.

The study tested 16 brands of bottled water stored at 158°F (70°C) for four weeks. While only one brand exceeded the EPA standard for antimony and BPA, the levels of these chemicals increased as the bottles warmed over time.

Another study by the University of Texas at Tyler confirmed that leaving bottled water in a hot car for a day or two poses minimal risk. However, if the water is left for weeks, there is a small chance that chemicals like BPA could leach into the water.

These studies highlight the importance of not leaving bottled water in hot environments for extended periods to avoid potential health risks.

Heat can accelerate the release of toxic substances from plastic water bottles. This can result in various health problems, including digestive issues, respiratory problems, disabilities, and an increased risk of cancer.

It is crucial to exercise caution and avoid drinking water left in a car for 24 hours. The potential health risks associated with consuming such water are significant. It is advisable to discard the water, clean the bottle, and refill it with fresh water or source clean drinking water from elsewhere.
