Why Newborn Hearing Screening Should Be Mandatory in India?

FacebookTwitterWhatsapp

Hearing is one of the fundamental senses that help a child learn and interact socially. However, congenital hearing loss present at birth is often missed for months or even up to a few years altogether. In India, newborn hearing screenings are not yet mandatory, and with nearly 25 million births each year, most of them do not undergo hearing screening. Thus, elevating the risk of being unidentified for hearing loss.

The successful implementation of UNHS as a matter of policy on the ground would doubtlessly improve early detection and intervention which should benefit children with hearing impairments to get the support necessary for a better quality of life. Raja S., Founder and Managing Director, Hearzap shares all you need to know:

The Need for Early Detection

One of the most often occurring sensory problems in infants is hearing loss. Of every 1,000 live births worldwide, it influences one to three newborns on average. Moreover, this number is even higher in India because of birth difficulties, infections, or genetic elements causing congenital hearing loss. Nevertheless, without mandated screening, there is a poor diagnosis whereby many children remain undetected until they fail to acquire typical speech and language skills, usually around two years or beyond.

Early diagnosis is essential since it can normalize language development in the first vital years of infancy, therefore improving the future prospects. The auditory paths to the brain are fast-changing during those years. Therefore, newborns with insufficient stimulation for their hearing will have difficulties with cognitive development, blending into society, and communicating. This also results in delayed diagnosis, leading to educational challenges and communication barriers.

Current Gaps in India’s Healthcare System

Unlike many developed countries with established newborn hearing screening programs, universal screening is still not widely implemented in several regions, leading to delayed detection and intervention. While some hospitals conduct hearing tests for infants, coverage remains limited due to low awareness among parents.

Particularly in rural areas where healthcare facilities are few, a major obstacle is the lack of infrastructure and qualified staff. Moreover, since congenital hearing loss is not a life-threatening condition, it usually does not have the same urgency as other newborn tests, such those for metabolic diseases.

The Benefits of Mandatory Newborn Hearing Screening

There are immense benefits associated with making newborn hearing screening mandatory all over the country:

  • Early Intervention Leads to Better Outcomes: Universal screening ensures early detection of hearing loss and intervention and support featuring hearing aids, cochlear implants, and speech therapy.
  • Cost-Effective Over Time: While early diagnosis limits the future expenses associated with severe speech therapy, special education, and supportive services, the development of an extensive newborn screening program may need a fair amount of recurrent mechanisms that seem high in initial investment.
  • Integrated Urban-Rural Approach: Mandated hearing screening for newborns would ensure further touchpoints for additional diagnostic scrutinization’s in each public health setting, where people from rural and less accessible areas can be benefited equally by hearing care services.
  • Support to Parents and Caregivers: Parents will procure the power of decision-making about their child’s health and development empowers through early screening, avoiding emotional as well as financial trauma related to a late diagnosis.

A Step Towards a Healthier Future

Mandatory newborn hearing screening is not just a healthcare initiative, it also is an investment in the future of India’s children. Early diagnosis and intervention can transform the lives of children with hearing loss, giving them the opportunity to develop language skills, thrive academically, and participate fully in society. By making hearing screening a priority, India can take a crucial step toward ensuring that no child is left behind due to an undiagnosed hearing impairment.
