Nuts play an important role in our daily diet, with walnuts standing out as especially beneficial due to their rich aroma and health-promoting properties. Rich in omega-3 fatty acids, they possess antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. According to an Instagram post by nutritionist Pooja Palriwala, starting the day with walnuts can support brain function and enhance memory.

A medical study titled Benefits of Walnuts on Cognition and Brain Health indicates that walnuts reduce oxidative stress by decreasing the production of free radicals and boosting antioxidant defences. This mitigates oxidative damage to lipids and proteins. Walnuts contain several components with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects.

    1. Brain Health Booster: Walnuts are abundant in omega-3 fatty acids and polyphenols, which enhance memory, focus, and overall cognitive function. They help lower the risk of neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s and are also referred to as brain food as they contain vitamin E and melatonin.
    2. Good For Heart Health: Walnuts are rich in healthy monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats, which lower bad cholesterol (LDL) and reduce inflammation, thus improving heart health by maintaining blood vessel health.
    3. Supports Weight Management: Walnuts are filled with healthy fats, protein, and fibre, keeping you full for longer periods. They reduce appetite and support a healthy metabolism. The omega-3 fatty acids, antioxidants, and polyphenols in walnuts help increase metabolic rate, aid in fat burning, and maintain muscle mass.
  • Promotes Gut Health: Walnuts are believed to nourish good gut bacteria, promoting the growth of beneficial probiotics such as bifidobacteria and lactobacillus. This improves digestion and gut health. The dietary fibre in walnuts helps regulate bowel movements, preventing constipation, bloating, and indigestion. Consume them with other gut-healthy foods to maximise their effectiveness.
  • Regulates Blood Sugar: Walnuts are said to manage blood sugar levels, which is beneficial for those with diabetes or those aiming to prevent blood sugar spikes. Their healthy fats, fibre, and antioxidants work together to regulate glucose levels and enhance insulin sensitivity.
  1. Good for Skin:Walnuts are also considered a superfood for the skin, as they are packed with essential nutrients like omega-3 fatty acids, antioxidants, vitamin E, and zinc. These nutrients promote radiant, youthful, and glowing skin. Regular consumption of walnuts helps combat acne, dryness, wrinkles, and dull skin. The healthy fats in walnuts lock in moisture, leaving the skin soft and hydrated.
