Oat Milk: Is It Healthy? Here Are It’s Pros And Cons

In recent years, the vegan movement has gained significant momentum, with more people choosing to ditch animal products for a healthier and ethical lifestyle. As a result, a variety of plant-based alternatives have flooded the market, offering nutrition without relying on animal-derived items like milk, eggs, paneer, or meat. One such option is oat milk, a dairy-free drink made from oats, almonds, soy, rice, and cashews. But the big question remains — is oat milk really as healthy as it’s touted to be? Let’s dive into the facts!

Oat milk is often hailed as a healthier alternative to dairy, praised for its low saturated fat content and rich nutrient profile. But a recent study from the University of Copenhagen, led by Professor Marianne Nissen Lund, reveals that plant-based milks, including oat milk, fall short in one key area — protein. The study found that these alternatives lack the essential amino acids and protein content found in cow’s milk, raising questions about their nutritional completeness.

Here are the benefits and disadvantages of incorporating oat milk into your daily routine.

Benefits

  • Lactose-free: Oat milk is an excellent choice for those who are lactose intolerant, as it contains no dairy or lactose.
  • Good for heart health: Oat milk contains beta-glucans, soluble fibres that can help lower LDL (bad) cholesterol levels. Studies have shown that oat milk can reduce total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol by 6% in men with moderate hypercholesterolemia.
  • Low in fat and cholesterol: Oat milk is lower in fat compared to cow’s milk, making it a good option for those on a weight loss journey.
  • Good for bone health: Oat milk is fortified with vitamin D, which helps the body absorb calcium, strengthens bones, and can help prevent osteoporosis.
  • Blood sugar regulation: Regular consumption of oat milk may help regulate blood sugar levels, making it a beneficial option for maintaining balanced glucose levels.

Disadvantages

  • May cause stomach issues: Some oat milk brands contain emulsifiers and gums to create a creamy texture. These ingredients may cause digestive discomfort for some individuals.
  • Might not be suitable for children: Due to its lower fat and protein content, oat milk may not be the best choice for young children, who require higher amounts of these nutrients for growth and development.
  • High in carbohydrates: Oat milk tends to be higher in carbohydrates, which may not be ideal for diabetics or those watching their carb intake.
  • Additives: Some commercially available oat milks contain additives like thickeners, emulsifiers, sweeteners, and artificial flavours. These may cause issues for individuals with digestive conditions like Crohn’s disease or colitis.
  • Costly: Oat milk is generally more expensive than regular cow’s milk, which could be a consideration for those on a tight budget.
