Prime Minister Narendra Modi welcomed Mauritius Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam to Varanasi on Thursday, where both leaders reaffirmed their countries’ commitment to peace and prosperity in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR) and the Global South.

The delegation-level talks centred on strengthening the Enhanced Strategic Partnership, identifying new opportunities to deepen collaboration across various sectors.

PM Modi emphasised the unique closeness between India and Mauritius, saying, “Though we are two nations, our dreams and destiny are one.” He described the bilateral ties as a familial bond rooted in centuries of shared culture and history.

Historic and Enduring Ties

Speaking at a joint press conference, PM Modi hailed the historic relationship, noting that traditions and values from India have long been deeply embedded in Mauritian society.

“Welcoming friends from Mauritius to Kashi is more than a formality—it is a spiritual union,” he said.

PM Modi announced a comprehensive economic package tailored to Mauritius’ development priorities, covering infrastructure, employment, and healthcare.

“It is a matter of pride for India to be a trusted and primary partner in Mauritius’ development,” he said.

The package includes support for the construction of an AYUSH Centre of Excellence, a 500-bed Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam National Hospital, a veterinary school, and an animal hospital.

PM Modi emphasised that India will advance projects such as the Chagos Marine Protected Area, the air traffic control tower at SSR International Airport, and highway expansion, calling the package an investment in their shared future rather than mere assistance.

Celebrating Sovereignty

PM Modi congratulated Mauritius on the historic Chagos Agreement, calling it a ‘victory for sovereignty’. He reiterated India’s steadfast support for Mauritius’ decolonisation and full sovereignty recognition.

India’s IIT Madras and Indian Institute of Plantation Management have signed agreements with the University of Mauritius, strengthening collaboration in research, education, and innovation, Prime Minister Modi announced.

Modi revealed plans to enable trade in local currency between India and Mauritius, building on the introduction of UPI and RuPay cards in Mauritius last year.

He also highlighted India’s support for Mauritius’ energy transition as a key element of their partnership.

Highlighting the importance of a stable Indian Ocean, PM Modi affirmed India’s commitment to enhancing the security and maritime capacity of Mauritius’ Exclusive Economic Zone.

“India has always stood as the first responder and net security provider in the Indian Ocean region,” he said.

The talks and announced initiatives reflect the shared ambition of India and Mauritius to deepen strategic ties, boost economic growth, and ensure regional stability, underpinning their vision of a prosperous and interconnected Indian Ocean Region.
